The Road to the National Team: ITF England Requirements & Standards

Representing your country on the international stage is the ultimate goal for
many martial artists. Wearing the England badge at a World or European Championship requires consistent excellence, preparation, and dedication.
To select the strongest competitors, the ITF England High Performance Program (HPP) follows a clear, transparent framework. Winning a single tournament is never a guaranteed golden ticket - selection is earned through year-round performance, engagement, and readiness.
Here is how the official ITF England National Team selection process works.
Athlete Eligibility Standards
Before an athlete can be evaluated by the Selection Committee, they must establish a strong foundation of regular training. Key eligibility criteria include:
Competition Eligibility: Meeting international rules for age, grade (Black Belt), and weight divisions.
Club Affiliation: Active membership at a registered ITF England affiliate club.
Year-Round Training: Training consistently at least twice per week at a home club.
Regular Competition: Competing routinely in recognized ITF Taekwon-Do tournaments.
HPP Engagement: Active participation in High Performance Programme training sessions and camps.
The ITF England National Championships serves as the principal annual selection event. Athletes must enter the exact division, weight, and grade category they wish to represent on the national squad.
Important Policy Rule: Winning a National Championship title carries significant weight and puts an athlete in a strong position. However, winning does not create an automatic entitlement to selection. Likewise, placing runner-up does not guarantee a second team spot. The result is a major evaluation factor, but not the sole deciding metric.
In early December, the Selection Committee holds a Final Assessment Event to gather further competitive evidence before making final selection decisions.
Attendance is mandatory for invited athletes - including National Championship winners when requested. Athletes are typically invited when:
Two top contenders met early in the National Championship draw.
Multiple places exist in a category, requiring direct head-to-head comparison.
An athlete missed Nationals due to accepted exceptional circumstances (e.g., illness or injury).
Additional performance evidence under pressure is required.
Key Selection Criteria
Final team selections are made by an impartial Selection Committee led by the Head Coach, alongside experienced coaches, senior ranks, and international umpires. Club neutrality is strictly enforced - no athlete receives preferential treatment based on home club affiliation.
The committee evaluates a broad body of evidence:
Tournament Performance: Results at Nationals, the Final Assessment, and overall quality of opposition faced.
International Experience: Past results, draw progression, and performance at European or World Championships.
Technical & Tactical Ability: Technical execution, tactical awareness, and physical conditioning.
HPP Commitment: Attitude, consistency, and attendance at national squad trainings and training camps.
Professionalism & Culture: Conduct, sportsmanship, and the ability to work effectively within the England team environment.
Selection Confirmation & Requirements
Final team selections for the upcoming competitive year are officially confirmed in December.
Selection is not permanent. Chosen athletes sign the National Team Athlete Agreement and must maintain training volume, physical fitness, HPP engagement, and high standards of conduct leading up to international championships.
